Hercules added Atletico Madrid to their growing list of big-name scalps after beating them 4-1.

The home side had the points all but wrapped up by half-time after netting four times before the break through Jorge Tote, Nelson Haedo Valdez, Olivier Thomert and David Trezeguet.

Atletico pulled a goal back late on through Jose Antonio Reyes but it was nothing more than a consolation for Quique Sanchez Flores' men, who are now seven points adrift of fourth-placed Valencia and the final Champions League spot.

For promoted Hercules, the victory lifts them up to 11th spot and is the latest of a series of impressive displays against La Liga's big guns this season.

The Alicante-based outfit are the only side to have beaten Barcelona so far, stunning the champions 2-0 at the Nou Camp, while they have also defeated Sevilla, drew with Villarreal after leading twice and were beating Real Madrid at half-time before going down to two late Cristiano Ronaldo goals.

Atletico, who face bitter rivals Real in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-finals on Thursday, were left stunned as Hercules raced into a 3-0 lead with barely half-an-hour on the clock.

Tote opened the floodgates in the 10th minute when he squeezed a shot past David De Gea at his near post from a tight angle.

De Gea will be disappointed to have been beaten in such fashion but he could do little about Hercules' second goal in the 23rd minute when Valdez found the far top corner of the net with a curling left-footed effort from the edge of the box.

Hercules' third goal arrived in the 32nd minute when Thomert rose near the penalty spot to meet Francisco Pena's left-wing cross and power a downward header past De Gea.

The home side were not finished there, though, and Trezeguet made it 4-0 just before half-time with his ninth league goal of the season.

Tote picked out Trezeguet on the edge of the box and the experienced Frenchman fired a first-time shot into the bottom corner of the net.

More goals looked likely in the second half as both sides struck the woodwork inside the opening 10 minutes, Sergio Aguero hitting the near post with a free-kick for Atletico and then moments later Pena saw his 20-yard effort also hit the frame of the goal for Hercules.

There would only be one more addition to the scoreline however, with Atletico netting in the 88th minute through Reyes, who stole possession near the goalline before sliding a low shot past Juan Calatayud.

Darren Ambrose is still buzzing from his wonder goal against Manchester United - but he would settle for a tap-in against semi-final opponents Cardiff if it fired Crystal Palace into the Carling Cup final.

The 27-year-old midfielder's stunning strike helped Palace pull off a major shock in November when they dumped the Red Devils out 2-1 in the quarter-finals and former United defender-turned-TV pundit Gary Neville claimed the 35-yarder was the best goal he had seen from a visiting team at Old Trafford in 20 years.

Ambrose admitted: "After Gary Neville's comments I had about 100 texts from people telling me what he had said, so hopefully I can do it again. I didn't actually know how far I was out until I watched it back. I'm always looking to shoot, I love scoring goals, but if it was a one-yard tap-in I'd take that."

Copyright (c) PA Sport 2012, All Rights Reserved.

Atletico Madrid kept their Champions League dreams alive after hitting back from 2-0 down to stun ten-man Villarreal.

Defeat would have left Atletico eight points behind fourth-placed Villarreal in the race for the final Champions League spot and it would have been hard for the Rojiblancos to make up that gap with only 11 games remaining.

But Abel Resino's side produced one of their best displays of the season to take the points after goals from Sergio Aguero, Diego Forlan and Antonio Lopez cancelled out efforts from Matias Fernandez and Cani.

Defeat was tough on Villarreal, and especially goalkeeper Diego Lopez who kept Atletico at bay almost single-handedly for much of the match and also saved an early penalty from Forlan, but the 65th-minute dismissal of Javi Venta meant Manuel Pellegrini's side were always up against it.

The two teams came into the match following contrasting Champions League results in midweek with Atletico being knocked out by Porto but Villarreal going through to the quarter-finals at the expense of Panathinaikos.

If Atletico were in mourning following that exit though it did not show as they tore into Villarreal's injury-hit defence straight from the off.

Fortunately for the visitors, they had Lopez behind them and he was in inspirational form.

The former Real Madrid custodian's heroics started inside the opening two minutes when he saved former Villarreal favourite Forlan's penalty after Aguero had been dragged down inside the box by Sebastian Eguren.

Lopez then produced three more outstanding saves to deny Maxi Rodriguez twice and also Simao as Atletico spent the opening 15 minutes virtually camped around the Villarreal area.

The Rojiblancos were then hit with the ultimate sucker-punch in the 18th minute as Villarreal broke away to take the lead with their first real chance of the match.

Venta did well down the right and his cut-back from the byline was slammed into the roof of the net by Fernandez.

That was a huge blow for Atletico and they almost conceded a second moments later when Giuseppe Rossi put in Santi Cazorla, but the Spain international's low shot was deflected away by Leo Franco's outstretched right leg.

Lopez was then back taking centre-stage with a remarkable double stop, first to keep out Raul Garcia's 25-yard piledriver before somehow tipping Aguero's shot from the rebound around the post.

Lopez's superb performance was the main reason why an exciting first half produced only one goal, but that statistic was to change immediately after half-time as both teams scored inside the opening seven minutes.

Villarreal were first to net as they doubled their lead when a slick one-two between Rossi and Cani saw the latter break into the Atletico area before coolly dinking the ball past Leo Franco.

However, the Yellow Submarine's two-goal advantage lasted just 60 seconds before Atletico hit back through Aguero as Lopez was finally beaten.

Forlan was unlucky to see his 20-yard shot rebound back off the post but Aguero was quickest to react to the loose ball to slot home into an empty net.

That was just the response Atletico needed with their Champions League dreams seemingly slipping away, and the home side were given a further boost in the 64th minute when Villarreal lost Venta to a second yellow following a foul on Simao.

From the resulting free-kick Forlan brought another fine diving stop out of Lopez, who must have been bracing himself at that point for a busy last half-hour.

He did well to push away Ever Banega's long-range effort in the 78th minute but he could do nothing to prevent Forlan bringing Atletico level two minutes later.

A deep cross to the far post was laid-back by Maxi and Forlan slotted home first time for a goal that was celebrated as enthusiastically by the player as by the Calderon crowd.

It was to get much better for Atletico though as moments later Lopez climbed above the Villarreal defence to glance home Simao's corner and re-ignite his side's hopes of a top-four finish.

Daniel Alves spoke of his delight after his switch to Barcelona appeared to move a step closer this weekend.

According to reports in Spain, Barca have agreed a deal to sign Alves from La Liga rivals Sevilla, with suggestions that the transfer will be officially confirmed on Monday.

The deal is thought to be worth 29.5 million euros, a price which could increase to as much as 35.5m euros if Alves helps Barca to league or Champions League success.

Alves is currently on international duty with Brazil, but when asked about his seemingly impending move to the Nou Camp, the flying full-back told Catalan radio station RAC-1: "I am very happy that an agreement has been reached. It is a great motivation for you because it means that they have confidence in your work.

"I am an ambitious player. I hope that joining such an important club will allow me to win important things. Hopefully we can win titles."

The 25-year-old has spent four seasons with Sevilla since signing from Brazilian club Bahia in 2003.

His form in helping the club to back-to-back UEFA Cup triumphs in 2006 and 2007 resulted in him being linked with several of Europe's top clubs, and he appeared close to joining Chelsea last summer.

The signing of Alves continues a busy summer for Barcelona, who have already signed defenders Gerard Pique and Martin Caceres, as well as former Sevilla midfielder Seydou Keita.

Barca's squad overhaul comes following a second successive trophyless season, and Alves added: "When things are not going well, you need to know when to change things and they have seen that.

"I hope to return Barcelona to the place where the belong and never should have left, and I will go there with the highest hopes of success."
